Africa Climate Caravans

Oxfam Climate Protest

Dear African Leaders,

We, the citizens and communities affected by the climate crisis across Africa, are suffering the devastating effects of floods, droughts, heat waves, rising sea levels, cyclones and forest fires.

While we did not cause the problem, we are the hardest hit by its effects, while polluting corporations and countries continue to reap huge profits from their excessive emissions.

We ask you to hold those most responsible for the climate crisis accountable for the damage they have caused,
We want you to:

  • Call on polluters to support the consolidation of resilient and economically viable food systems built on our traditional knowledge, own resources and agroecological practices. This will increase our adaptive capacity, strengthen our resilience and reduce our vulnerability to climate change, according to Article 7 of the Paris Agreement.
  • Demand that industrialized nations pay their fair share by giving us the means to r recover from the impacts of climate change that exceed our ability to adapt, in line with historical responsibility and the polluter pays principle, which must guide the establishment and implementation of the Loss and Damage Fund.
  • Insist on the obligations of developed countries to commit and implement the financial, technological and capacity-building support needed in our African countries to build a clean and climate-resilient future, in accordance with Art. 9, 10 and 11 of the Paris Agreement.
  • Speak out against the unfair, capitalistic, neoliberal, racist and patriarchal financial system that prevent our most vulnerable countries to benefit from their resources and address the climate crisis causes and effects.

We are asking for $ 5 trillion a year for the new collective quantified goal (NCQG) and system transformation that ensures that African countries receive the means to implement climate action.

Africa deserves a sustainable and equitable future. We urge you to take a bold stand now.
We assure you, African leaders, of our unwavering support in this fight for climate justice.

Sincerely,
